Rosenthal and Jacobson (1968) asked if teachers’ expectations of student intellectual ability (independent variable) would influence students’ academic performance (dependent variable). Referred to as the Pygmalion effect or self- fulfilling prophecy, they wondered if biased expectations of the target (i.e., the students) would affect the target’s performance. Using a field-experimental method to test this, students in a California elementary school were given IQ tests at the start of the semester; students’ scores were not disclosed to teachers. Teachers were told some students, labeled “intellectual bloomers,” were exceedingly smart…which was not the case; the “bloomers” were a randomly chosen 20% of the students tested. At the end of the semester, the same IQ test was given to all students. “Bloomers” showed a statistically significant gain in IQ scores. Because teachers had been led to believe bloomers had tremendous academic potential (i.e., biased expectation), teachers paid them more attention, challenging and stimulating them more than students who were not expected to be great achievers (i.e., influence of expectations on teachers’ behavior). As hypothesized, findings show that others’ expectations of a target person can influence that person’s behavior, thereby creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.
