Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.Week 1: Introducing Social PsychologyWhen explaining human behavior, people often ignore the extent to which the social context influences what people do, preferring instead to believe people’s behavior simply reflects who they are. The power of the situation to impact individual thoughts, attitudes, and behavior is Social Psychology’s defining feature; what follows in the next 11 weeks will reinforce this central concept. If an individual person treats another in a cruel or aggressive way, is that because of the individual’s unique disposition or personality? Or, does the power of the situation better explain why an individual would behave in a cruel or aggressive manner? The famous ‘Stanford Prison Experiment’ makes a strong case for the power of the situation in determining individuals’ behavior (Zimbardo, 1971). In this experiment, Philip Zimbardo sought to explain the hostility that characterizes American prisons; specifically, he wondered if prison guards were sadistic people (i.e., dispositional/personality) who took satisfaction in brutalizing others or if their brutal treatment of prisoners is better explained by the rigid power structure of the prison social environment (i.e., situational). The researchers identified the most psychologically stable, healthy college males who were randomly assigned to “roles” as either prisoners or prison guards in a mock prison; participants were paid $15/day. Every attempt was made to simulate the prisoner experience including arrest, fingerprinting, mug shots, and strip searches. Prisoners were confined to 6 x 9 foot “cells” with no privacy and only a cot for comfort. Guards, on the other hand, were given rest and relaxation areas and other comforts. In very short order, guards comfortably assumed their roles; they were instructed to call prisoners only by their assigned numbers, to dehumanize them, leading to a loss of sense of self. Asserting their authority, guards harassed the prisoners and deprived them of sleep. After only the second day, the prisoners rebelled; the guards retaliated with skin-chilling carbon dioxide streams shot from fire extinguishers and by calling in additional guards. Intended to last fully two weeks, the experiment was terminated after only six days. This week, you will examine what makes social psychology distinct from other fields of psychology and from sociology. You will also explore the conflict a person can have between her or his behavior and her or his sense of self when certain behaviors are expected in a given situation.Reference:Haney, C., Banks, W. C., & Zimbardo, P. G. (1973). Interpersonal dynamics in a simulated prison. Sometimes the compulsion to fit in leads people to say or do something at odds with their sense of self. No one wants to be perceived as weird. Therefore, when the situation calls for a certain kind of behavior, people are likely to comply, even when that behavior is not consistent with their self-concept.For this Discussion, you will examine conflict between a person’s behavior and sense of self.To PrepareThink of a specific situation when you said or did something that you believed was out of character. Note: You will use this specific situation for this Discussion so make sure the situation is one you feel comfortable sharing with your colleagues.
