Respond to one of the prompts below for your main post:1) How assertively do you communicate? Explain the concept of assertiveness, and discuss when you communicate assertively and when being assertive is challenging for you. When it’s challenging, do you tend to become passive, aggressive, or passive aggressive, and how might you learn to communicate more assertively in those situations?2) What does it means to engage in “dual perspective” and why is it so important? Explain dual perspective, and discuss how expressing dual perspective helps improve verbal communication in interpersonal interactions. 3) Discuss one or two slang or colloquial terms you and your friends or sub-culture use, that aren’t necessarily understood by those outside your group or sub-culture. How are the terms useful for you and your peers, and how do they help create your group’s identity? How do the terms differ in meaning from what they might mean to those outside your group or sub-culture? How do the terms promote a sense of belonging within your group, but also perhaps serve to exclude those outside your group?4) Cultures, sub-cultures, and social movements use language as a primary tool to change attitudes, values, behaviors, and larger cultural life. Discuss an example of how a culture or social movement with which you are familiar has used specific words, phrases, etc. to communicate and influence others to alter their views of persons, groups, issues, and/or practices. 5) “Totalizing” occurs when an individual is defined by a single characteristic or aspect. Not quite the same thing as stereotyping, totalizing fixes on one thing and fails to acknowledge other aspects of the person. Discuss an example of when you have totalized someone, or been totalized yourself, resulting in the perception of your/their identity being reduced to a single feature or dimension. 6) Describe how persons in a “speech community” you’re familiar with share a common understanding of the purposes of “talk” or of conversing. For example, do people talk/converse mainly just to exchange information in brief, functional ways? Or mainly to facilitate accomplishing tasks? Is talk used to exchange ideas and opinions? Is talk used also to express feelings and the nature of relationships? 7) What does it mean to use “I Language” rather than “You Language”? Explain what it means to own your own feelings and thoughts by engaging in “I Language,” and discuss how shifting from using “You Language” to using more “I Language” helps improve communication in interpersonal interactions. 8) Discuss a couple examples of how we use specific language when we like someone to accent their good qualities and downplay their flaws or when we dislike someone to emphasize their negative features. Or perhaps an example of how you’ve observed friends/partners engage in enhancing or negatively impacting their relationship by the way they talk about it and the language they use to describe it.
