RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING POST:Henry David Thoreau was a Nineteenth Century writer who could inspire or infuriate his readers at the time, and now his writings continue to allow the readers to challenge their societal responsibilities and duty to nature. In Levine’s “The Norton Anthology of American Literature” he says “During his time at Walden, Thoreau also spent one night of 1846 in the local jail when, in protest against what he regarded as the proslavery agenda of the way against Mexico, he refused to pay his poll tax. That experience would inspire ‘Resistance to Civil Government’ (1849), which in due time would become world-famous essay on the relationship of the individual to the state.” (Levine 951).I like how Thoreau starts off “Resistance to Civil Government” (Thoreau 953) with “I heartily accept the motto, – ‘That government is best which governs least;’ and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe, – ‘That government is best which governs not at all;’ and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient.” (Thoreau 953).Thoreau uses a metaphor comparing government to a “wooden gun” (Thoreau 953) illustrating how government can sometimes be useless. Thoreau stood up for the principles he believed in, see the quote above about spending the night in the jail because he refused to pay the poll tax. He felt this was part of the proslavery movements agenda and he did not support it. Thoreau felt government imposed itself upon the people and those in charge many times did it for their own advantage. Thoreau felt the best government is one that governs least. He did not call for an overthrow of the government but instead seek ways to make it better.
