Standards must serve as the foundation for a productive, balanced assessment system.
In this module’s Application assignment, you will unpack a standard, develop a table of test specifications, and create a curriculum map for a unit of study. You will submit only the table of test specifications for peer review feedback in the Module 3 discussion.
Use APA format for the title page, references page, and in-text citations.
Include an introduction and conclusion for your assignment.
Part 1: Follow the “Unpacking a Standard” directions to complete the activity.
Part 2: Create the table in a Word document and follow the “Develop a Table of Test Specifications” directions/example to complete the activity.
Part 3: Create the table in a Word document and follow the “Create a Curriculum Map” directions/example to complete the activity.
Submit a single document that includes: an APA-formatted title page, 5-7 pages containing Parts 1-3, and a references page. Download the example tables as a Download PDF file.
Part 1: Unpacking a Standard
In this module, you will unpack a standard, write learning objectives for the standard, develop a table of test specifications for the standard, and create a curriculum map demonstrating the alignment of assessment, curriculum, and instruction.
*
Step 1. Identify a state standard, your grade level, and your content area.Step 2. Unpack the standard:Identify the big ideas. State in complete sentences.
Identify three enduring understandings. What do you want students to remember after they’ve forgotten most of the details? State in complete sentences.
Use McTighe and Wiggins’ six facets of understanding to identify essential questions. Label each question with the facet of understanding – explain, interpret, application, perspective, empathy, self-knowledge.
Develop a concept map for the six essential questions that come to mind. Tutorials for developing a concept map are available at: Digital Learning Connections Resources and Tips.
Step 3. Compose three measurable, standards-based learning objectives that specify the task, the condition, and the standard of performance. Before you write the objectives, think about where your instruction will place the greatest emphasis. For example, if the overall standard wants students to apply knowledge, make sure that at least one of your objectives uses a verb at the application level.Step 4. Select a topic for a one-week unit of study that best represents the standard, its big ideas, enduring understandings, essential questions, and learning objectives. Describe your topic/unit in a well-developed paragraph.
Part 2: Develop a Table of Test Specifications
In this part of the Application, you will apply Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy to create a table of test specifications for a 10-item, summative, multiple-choice exam that measures student performance at the end of your one-week unit of study.Step 1. Create the table in the Word or text document. (An example is provided in the PDF linked above.)Step 2. Complete:the standard
the title of the unit of study
the grade level and content area
total points for the exam (already noted)
objectives from Part 1
Step 3. Record the three levels of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy at which you are assessing students. To decide the levels, look at the verbs in your three objectives. What verb represents the lowest cognitive level? Record that level in your chart.
What is the highest cognitive level? Record that level in your chart.
What is the middle level? Record that level.
Remember to think: Does at least one of the objectives represent the cognitive level specified in the standard?Step 4. For the 10 multiple-choice items, determine the number of items and the percent of items per objective. To find the percent, divide the number of items by 10, the total number of items on the test.
Part 3: Create a Curriculum Map
Now you will create a curriculum map for your one-week, standards-based, unit of study and describe the rationale for your assessment choices. The PDF linked above provides one example of a curriculum map. Remember, the assessments should reflect your major instructional emphasis, including research-based strategies you will use to meet the needs of diverse learners.Rational for Assessment Choices
Summarize the rationale for your assessment choices in a well-developed paragraph. Example:My choices reflect a balanced approach to assessment. I will administer the pretest for diagnostic purposes to decide what my students already know and can do and what I need to teach them. The formative assessments will help both my students and me assess progress on a daily basis and inform me as to where I need to strengthen instruction. Application of knowledge is the major goal of the unit, and the performance assessment will allow students to demonstrate what they know and can do. The summative, end-of-unit test will provide data for decision making before we move on to the next unit of study. There may be concepts and skills which I need to re-emphasize in the next unit, and summative data will point the way. Lastly, student reflections are important tools of self- expression that increase students’ ownership of the assessment process and provide valuable insight for me about their learning.
