Watch a film centered on one of the places and periods of history The film must be set in the time periods we’re studying. For example, the Mummy won’t work.
Write a 1-3 page report, including:
An introductory paragraph, including the title of the film, name of the director, major cast members, when it was released, why you chose to watch it, is this the first time you’ve watched this particular film, etc.
A 1-3 paragraph summary of the plot
1-3 paragraphs discussing how it compares with the reality of the historical period or individual — are the details right, like costuming, setting, vernacular language. Are there anachronisms (for example, a visible cell phone or a wristwatch in a film taking place in the 1600s). Is the history correct – for example, does Troy fall or does the siege fail. Does it match with what we’ve learned about this time period or this individual? Where does it differ?
1-2 paragraphs telling me what you thought about the film. Did you like it? Why? If not, why not? Did the film add to your understanding of the time period or individual, or did it muddy the historical waters, so to speak?
The amount of work you put into the report will dictate how much extra credit you get for it.
This must be at least 750 words.
Use MLA format, including in-line/in-text citations, and the Works Cited page.

Write a journal entry on Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare by answering the questions below. The answer to each question must be at least 50 words:
Which part or idea or concept in the play was most interesting to you? Why?
Did the reading help you to understand the people, culture, and religion of Reformation England? Why? Why not?
Your general comments about the play.
What one thing stuck out to you the most? A character, a scene, a piece of dialogue? Describe it, and discuss why it stuck out to you the most. What do you think it means? What do you think Shakespeare intended it to mean?
If you’ve seen any adaptations of the play, either on film or on stage, a list which ones you’ve seen, and describes each one (director, stars, when it was released or staged). In addition to any other versions of the play you may have seen, watch the filmed version of the play, directed by Franco Zeffirelli (1968), on Swank Digital Campus (make sure to watch the correct version of the film). Compare the various versions you’ve seen to each other, and to the written version of the play. Note specific differences (dialogue, scenes, when and where it was set –modern-day or Renaissance Verona, etc. Do the differences in the films or staged plays vary from each other and from the play? Why? Why not? Do the differences work (ie. make the story more accessible, move more quickly, more interesting)? Why? Why not? Does changing the time period or setting work for you? Why? Why not? FYI – West Side Story does count for this assignment — it’s not a direct version of the play, word for word, but the story is the same. NOTE – THIS SHOULD BE A LOT LONGER THAN JUST 50 WORDS!
If you’ve seen any other plays (or films of plays) by Shakespeare, specify which ones you’ve seen (films or on stage, director, stars, when it was released). Describe them. Compare them to Romeo and Juliet (the written play by Shakespeare). Which play/plays do you like better? Why?

Write a journal entry on the Dante reading (canto 3-9 from the Divine Comedy: the Inferno) by answering the questions below. The answer to each question must be at least 50 words:

Did the reading help you to understand the people, culture, and religion of Christianized Europe? Why? Why not?
Your general comments about the reading.
Choose one specific passage — a paragraph, or statement, or a few sentences — that stands out to you. State the passage. Why did you choose it? What about it stands out to you? What does the passage mean to you?
Keeping in mind what we’ve learned about earlier concepts of the afterlife (Egypt, Greece, Judaism), how does Dante’s concept of Hell differ? His concept of the Devil? Be specific — use examples from the readings/lectures. NOTE: THIS SHOULD BE A LOT LONGER THAN JUST 50 WORDS!

Write a 2-3 page paper, with the following requirements:
A 2-3 paragraph summary of Herodotus’s work (each paragraph at least five sentences)
Analysis of the work:
1. Is it all factual? Does it include Herodotus’ own observations, knowledge, etc., or does it also include hearsay — in other words, does Herodotus include things of which he has no personal knowledge, but has heard someone else say?
2. Does it indicate an ethnographic bias? Herodotus is a Greek historian, the first historian, actually. Does his description of Egypt and the Egyptians include a comparison with Greece, either overt or implied? Is he looking at Egypt through the eyes of a Greek, or objectively?
3. Where do you think he’s exaggerating or fabricating material? You might include here what he states that does not fit in with what you have learned/already know about Egypt.
Write at least one paragraph, of at least five sentences, for each of these parts of the analysis
Be specific in your answers. Use quotes/examples/evidence from the textbook, from Herodotus’ piece, or from reliable sources.
You can do a longer paper — just don’t bore me!
Use MLA formatting, including in-line/in-text citations and the Works Cited page.
