Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public. Discuss factors that influence the public’s perception of nursing. Describe ways to educate the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing within a changing health care system.
Example #1 (Shawn)
Throughout history, the general public’s perception of the nursing profession has shifted. It was interesting to learn that the nursing profession was once viewed as prostitution. Personally, I have noticed the shift in the general public’s perception due to COVID-19. I watched the public begin to view nurses as heroes after many lives were saved due to the virus.
Cultural and Media influences have skewed the public’s perception of nursing. In a cultural and geographical sense, Hollywood has largely impacted the influence of public perception in regard to nursing. For example, “Unfortunately, Hollywood often depicts nurses in ways that are far from reality, with nurses portrayed as everything from sex symbols to drug addicts” (Dean, 2018). This can be seen through different television shows and movies that are produced in Hollywood with people playing the role of a nurse in either a sexual or druggie way.
From a technology standpoint, nursing will continue to become more advanced which will be essential since the health care system is always changing. I believe the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing will be enhanced due to the advanced technology that will soon be implemented. For example, “The summit phase designed pillars of action to include communication and collaboration, education, informatics design, information technology, culture, management and leadership, and policy” (Dean, 2018). The Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform will set in motion a way to reform education in regard to nursing. It will be inevitable that this will then enhance the general public’s perception of the nursing profession.

example#2 (aura)
The general public’s perception of the nursing profession is good. I also think that within the last two years, the perception has changed greatly. Nursing as a whole gained a lot of respect because people saw that nurses were are the forefront. They acted selfless and sacrificed a lot. People saw what nurses went through and they were hailed for courageous work on the front lines. Making nursing still one of the most trusted professions.
Some factors that can influence the public’s perception of nursing are television shows and social media. Some television shows don’t portray nurses in the best light and that can leave a stigma of what the public thinks nurses are, what they do, and what they are capable of. The same goes for social media. It is important to be aware of what is shared on social media platforms as this can question professionalism and not to mention jeopardize your career. Something that seems harmless or innocent to one person may not be to another.
Educating the public on nursing roles can look many different ways. With technology evolving daily the strides the medical field is making is incredible. As nurses we must adhere to many rules and must have the education to prove that we are capable.
Nursing is a process of regulatory boards, standards of care, codes of ethics, accrediting bodies, education, and evaluation. (Dean 2018) Not anyone can be a nurse. It takes special people who are empathetic, sympathetic, and are willing to put the patients needs first.
