Learning Goal: I’m working on a cyber security writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
After reading this weeks assigned chapter 5, discuss the case study 5.1 – of Edward Snowden.
Why is it important for the US government, corporations, and citizens to know this information?
Case Study 5.1: Edward Snowden—Going Dark
Edward Snowden, an American computer professional, worked for the CIA until 2013 when he leaked several thousand documents with National Security Agency surveillance information about U.S. citizens and foreign governments and citizens to WikiLeaks. Snowden’s revelations not only showed the complete surveillance of Americans but a large part of the globe. Snowden, who is hiding in Russia from U.S. law enforcement (for charges of treason), also published his advice for keeping private information protected.
Snowden provided four tips on how to keep your data private:
1. Encryptyourphonecallsandtextmessages.UsingthefreeappSignal,customerscanpreventanyonefromlisteningtotheir conversations.
2. Encryptyourcomputerharddrive.Ifsomeonestealsyourcomputer, heorshewouldhaveallofyourprivateinformation, including your address, children’s pictures, and possibly your Social Security number, bank account numbers, and other information that would allow the criminal to steal your identity, harm your kids, or harm you in other ways.
3. Useapasswordmanagertocreateandstoreuniquepasswords.Ifsomeonestealsyourpasswordandyouhaveuseditforseveral purposes, which most people do, criminals can access all of that information. For instance, if you use the same password for your different banking accounts or credit cards, the thief would be able to access all of your bank accounts.
4. Usetwo-factoridentification,suchasusingapasswordandafingerprintorotherphysicaldevice.Thismakesitsignificantly harder for criminals to access your data. The U.S. government already uses multifactor identification for digital accounts as part of the White House initiative “kill the password.” This initiative funds several private projects working on the development of password alternatives.18
