Learning Goal: I’m working on a art discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Assignment 1
To begin the course we will create four compositions and upload them to a discussion so that we can enjoy the results. This is an assignment where you learn about your materials and learn some hand skills. You will need your Bristol board (the paper), your 18″ ruler, your pencil, your knife, and your pens–maybe brushes and ink–if you are not down with the pens. You will work only in black and white. You will see examples of what to make. After you upload to the discussion board you should make comments on the work of two other students.
Your four compositions should be neat and clean. If they are a big mess you will receive a low grade. Follow what you see in the videos, use the assigned materials, use your brain, and build skills. You will use these skills all semester! Take a good picture, get the file name correct–and if you have a mess–start over! Do the assignment until it looks amazing.
This assignment will take 12 hours.
This first practice exercise introduces the concept of line. Line can be used to nudge decisions, create directions, and direct people. Lines can be curved or straight. The angle of the lines implies a feeling. Gradual curved lines or sharply curved lines also create a feeling. Lines can be dashed, jagged, smooth, and implied.
A good example of an implied line are the white lines on the freeway. These are dashed lines and disconnected from one another, not a solid line, but these lines mark the lanes on the freeway. We know our car belongs inside the lines, and that we can change lanes, and that we should stay in our lane! Imagine what driving would be like without these dashed lines telling us what to do!
TERM: Line
A point in motion, a series of adjacent points, a connection between points, or as an implied connection between points. Lines can connect, dissect or define shapes and spaces within design.

Lets get started!
You will make four compositions. You need one piece of Bristol board and the supplies listed above. Cut the Bristol board with your knife and ruler into 4 pieces–these will be 7″ x 8.5″
Create your first assignment as follows:
All work is to be completed using pens–not pencils or other media.
Zig zag lines not overlapping where one side is light and the other side dark.
Horizontal lines of various thicknesses and distances between the lines.
Use your pencil to lightly create a series of circles. Use straight lines going in different directions (zig zag) to fill in the circles and connect these using the straight lines to create an interesting optical effect. Make the lines in the center of the circle closer together and the outer lines farther apart. New sheet of paper.
Wavy lines. Using only thin lines fill a page with curved lines with different arcs of which follow one another and form an overall pattern.

PRO TIP:
PRACTICE FIRST
Your four compositions should be neat and clean. If they are a big mess you will receive a low grade. Follow what you see in the videos, use the assigned materials, use your brain, and build skills. You will use these skills all semester! Take a good picture, get the file name correct, and if you have a mess–start over! Do the assignment until it looks amazing.
Finally, for the discussion board you must include a reflective statement about the project. For example, what was the nature of your learning process? Give an example of problem solving, revelation, how the concept helped the process, experience of making, time taken, working environment, let us know what you experienced.
Review 0.2b Photographing your work
Your file has to be named correctly like this:
FirstName_LastName_Description.jpg
For multiple submissions:
FirstName_LastName_Description_01.jpg | FirstName_LastName_Description_02.jpg etc.
When you are finished upload your four images to the discussion board. After you upload to the discussion board you should make comments on the work of two other students.
