A stakeholder in a corporation, defined first in 1963 is a member of groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist. The concept of a stakeholder in healthcare can involve partnerships and have formal and informal leaders. “In healthcare the main stakeholders are Patients, Providers (professionals and institutions), Payors, and Policymakers (‘The four Ps’ in healthcare)” (Lübbeke, Carr, & Hoffmeyer, 2019).
I spoke with my preceptor at the Rand Schrader clinic, and she didn’t know where an organizational chart of stakeholders was. She did list off groups that influence and fund the clinic like the Department of Health Services (DHS) board and their board of supervisors. She explained that we are umbrellaed under the DHS and are named as a hospital base clinic for LAC+USC medical center. Keck Medicine is in fact our main stakeholder via LAC+USC. DHS facilities contract with Healthnet, LA Care, and those uninsured. These are the Payors in the four Ps’ in healthcare. To me, who she named are more formal leaders of the clinic. These are the groups that create and enforce guidelines, policies, and regulations. Those are the Policymakers in the four Ps’ in healthcare.
Informal leaders that our organization would cease to exist is of course, the patients, physicians, and nurses that join at the clinic every business day. The leaders and managers of the clinic audit work and are responsible for hiring and training staff. Those groups are the first 2 of the 4 Ps’ of healthcare stakeholders. Stakeholders and partnerships at the clinic are what makes it possible to care for thousands of vulnerable HIV positive patients of Los Angeles County. It is important for me to understand the formal and informal stakeholder roles as I create projects that will improve the quality of care provided there.
