A sandbox discussion is a specific kind of class discussion. It is run and operated by students with the goal of students using the Internet to help each other gain a better understanding of the material in this module. In plain English, this is where you ask your questions for others to help you answer, and you help answer others’ questions. This is the place where you learn what you need to make the rest of the module go smoothly for you.
What Do I Do in a Sandbox?
This discussion requires you to post substantively at least three times, at least one initial post and at least two replies to your peers.
What Do I Put In My Initial Post?
In your initial post, ask as specifically as you can what you are still wondering about the myths you read for this module. General questions are usually not a good idea, because they’re usually too big to be answered. Try to be specific: for example, instead of asking, “What’s going on in the Prose Edda?” you could ask, “What is Snorri trying to say in Prologue 5?” Or, instead of asking, “Who is Freya?” you could say, “There’s Freya and Freyr. Can someone tell me the difference between the two? Are they the same person or related?”
In general, it’s a good idea to limit your initial post to about 3-5 questions, depending on how specific they are. Ask things you are really wondering—this is the place to get help for what you need to know.
What Do I Put In My Responses?
For your responses, find a student with a question you’d like to answer. Then, dig around on the Internet (and/or other resources, if you have them), and find the answer to their question. Write a response that gives an answer to at least one of the questions in the other student’s initial post, and give an appropriate amount of detail. Please paste links and/or other citations for the sources you used, so others can review what you found if they need to do so.
