As we learned from the lecture for this week and from our readings, the Pre-Socratic Philosopher, Zeno of Elea, used paradoxes to show that Parmenides was correct in saying that all is One. In fact, what Zeno wanted to show, as in the Paradox of the Arrow, or of Achilles and the Tortoise, is that motion and space are illusions. In reality, the arrow cannot move and Achilles cannot beat the tortoise in a race. Here is a little video about all of this.
TedEd. “What is Zeno’s Dichotomy Paradox- Colm Kelleher”. YouTube, 2013, April 15. https://youtu.be/EfqVnj-sgcc
Reading Zeno’s Paradoxes can make one’s head spin. In this week’s post first explain what Zeno was trying to accomplish by creating his paradoxes. Many people over time have tried to solve the problems Zeno presents us with, but if we consider the Paradox of the Arrow, first discuss what you think a possible answer might be.
Then, review the reading on Atomism and focus on the difference between “nothing” and “no-thing” or “void.” They are not the same thing as Democritus pointed out. See if you can figure out the answer to the Arrow Paradox using the idea of nothing (as in there is nothing there) instead of no-thing (as in a void). Tell us all what you think.
(Please do not try and look this up in a search engine. What you’ll likely find is an enormous number of confused mathematicians who want to promote their interpretation of this as the correct answer. Zeno was not a mathematician so he would not have thought as they do. Democritus is most likely right. So go with him as the text describes him.)
